I had the amazing opportunity to participate in a very cool event earlier this summer. A Very Special Prom (AVSP) is an opportunity for exceptional young adults, ages 14-30, in the Charleston/Low Country area to experience a formal prom. For some, physical and/or mental abilities may limit their attendance and enjoyment of traditional high school proms.
Founded by Jessica Gibbs-Amaro, whose sister Christine lives with Williams Syndrome, was inspired to begin a journey to provide more to those in our society who are often overlooked.
Jessica has passionately championed for events that are geared towards young adults with special needs, AVSP is just one of several events that Jessica has helped bring about in the Low Country.
This year’s prom was held at the North Charleston Fie Museum. The prom was free to attendees who were dressed to the hilt.
